Teaching kids how to clean and organize their room can be a challenging task. It can create fights and disappointment between kids and parents. But there are a few things you can do to help teach your kids how to clean and organize their room.
Show Them
Cube Toy Storage
One of the problems with telling kids to clean their room is that their version of clean may be different from yours. Go around the room with them and explain what types of things need to be done to make the room clean and be specific. It may help to create a check list on a small dry erase board including tasks you want them to complete when cleaning their room like putting clothes away, picking up toys, putting books on the bookshelf.
The first time go through and clean the room with them showing them how. Try to make it a fun exercise so they have a positive feeling about it.
Provide The Tools They Need
Make this task easier for them by providing things like their own trash basket and providing places to store their things. Have them use their own trash basket and empty it themselves either once a week or when it is full. Having good storage, a place for everything, can help teach them the principles of organization.
Try to offer fun and practical storage devices for them. If they are not either fun or easy to use they will lose interest fast. Use things like cube storage where they can put labeled baskets or bins for their things. You can get different colored bins for different types of items, or find bins they can decorate themselves so they have pride in this area.
A bookshelf can be used for books or a number of other things. They can display some of their artwork where they can easily see it, or they can store prized possessions here where they can have easy access to them while keeping them neatly displayed while not in use.
The Joy Of Giving
Trying to keep more stuff in their room than should be in there will make it difficult for them to keep their room clean. Help them sift through things they don't need anymore. Go through the closets and drawers collecting the clothes that no longer fit. Also go through toys they have outgrown or have no interest in anymore. Teach them the joy of giving. They can either give these items to a friend or family member who may like them, or they can donate them to a charity.
With a little help from you kids can learn how to clean and organize their room. They just need a little encouragement and a few of the right tools.
